The subtle color palette of the porch furniture blends with the rustic views surrouding the house. Again, because Southern Living will be covering the house in the August issue this year, we couldn’t take pics of all rooms, but did get to do a preview of the dining room and guesthouse. This is the well-lit dining room, simple and spacious.
The subtle color palette of the porch blends with the rustic views surrouding the guest house. Ample seating allows for a comfortable perch for visitors. Front and back doors open directly into a two-story-high living room, where spruce-planked walls and wood beams salvaged from an 1890 Tennessee barn reflect the home's rural setting and give the space a refined, barnlike feel. Interior decorator Phoebe Howard balanced the rustic elements with color. "I added an air of elegance with a soft color palette that reflects the surrounding sky and hills," she says.
Here are The Best Takeaway Tips From Brittney's Space
The 1940s bungalow needed only a cosmetic face-lift, so she applied fresh paint and decorated with her self-described "sentimental and collected" style. An unstoppable thrift-store shopper, Brittney learned the art of the "curated knickknack" from her grandmother. She accented her investment pieces with an eclectic mix of vintage decor, family hand-me-downs, budget-friendly finds, and a diverse art collection. "It's a treasure hunt, and what makes each piece feel special is when you find it in a memorable way," she notes.

The chevron design of the wood door dates back centuries. The pattern keeps the door stable and sheds water to prevent warping.

FHM Intern Miles McNulty with Talk of the Town co-host Meryll Rose in study of Idea House.FHM began at 3 a.m. Preparing for Fox 17 live at the Southern Living Idea House. Since opening 50 years ago, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries.
I sauntered over and said hi, Jaime, I have to tell you one thing, “we have great taste in clothes.”. She laughed and was super friendly and I decided that we had to take a pic together, just to prove it. I also had to tell her that I just love her mama, cause I do. I have always admired and respected Barbara Mandrell so much. A big crowd gathered and it was a beautiful evening for an outdoor party.

Duke aesthetic employs classical theory with an emphasis on historical precedent. We seek sustainable solutions that minimize our impact on the environment. "It's appropriate that I found my house in the same way I find a lot of my furniture—online," says Brittney Forrister of the home she saw for sale on Facebook. The buzz around Nashville's up-and-coming Woodbine neighborhood had sparked her interest, but what sealed the deal? "Every time I walk into a house and see built-in shelves, I'm sold. I love and live in books," she says.
Every year, Southern Living selects a project team to develop one “Idea House” that inspires consumers to experiment in their homes and gardens. We put together an all-star team to design the ultimate Nashville house. Mimicking an old farmhouse, the main house revolves around one large living room flanked by a hardworking kitchen on one end that boasts a laundry room with enviable laundry room shelving. The exterior boasts a wraparound front porch with extra-deep porch swings and completely a separate rear-dining porch that is connected to the living room and dining room. Outside the main house, Historical Concepts designed several guest houses and bunkies each with their own kitchenette and porch so that company could have their own privacy.

It was a treat to see Lindsay again, I love talking to him and never miss his letter at the beginning of each month in the magazine. Everyone at Fontanel was so friendly and welcomed us all in. It’s such a treat to get to meet them all at events like this.
This bedroom's impressive example, which is from the Mr. and Mrs. Howard collection by Sherrill Furniture, combines graceful spools, four tall posts , and a pretty painted finish. The Idea House is open Wednesdays through Sundays with a portion of the proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Each year Southern Living builds one spectacular Idea House in the nation which showcases the best and latest in building, design and gardening. This exciting project returned to the Nashville area after over a decade to the beautiful Fontanel property, former home of country music legend Barbara Mandrell’s family. Designer Phoebe Howard, Southern Living columnist, divided the large areas into individual vignettes including one of our favorite, the hanging porch swing with Sunbrella pillows. For more than 30 years, Historical Concepts has designed residences in classical and Southern vernacular styles, marrying elements of traditional design with floor plans and details that reflect today’s pattern of living. Inspired by architectural precedent and the characteristics of the setting, these houses pay homage to and perpetuate the South’s deep sense of place and are timeless in style and enduring in value.
Headquartered in Birmingham, AL, the rapidly expanding Southern Living brand is part of Time Inc., one of the largest content companies in the world and the largest publisher in the United States. She pairs unexpected fabrics and trims on window treatments, pillows and upholstery with surprising uses of color on cabinetry, walls and ceilings. “Our refined farmhouse draws from Tennessee’s rich architectural legacy to look like it has always been there,” said Lindsay Bierman, Editor-in-Chief of Southern Living. I just bought this at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago and love it. Jaime Dudney, Barbara Mandrell’s daughter, was introduced from the speaker podium during the talks and I noted that she and I had on the same dress! I couldn’t let the opportunity go by without speaking to her and making light of the fact that we were dressed alike.
Southern Living editor, Lindsay Bierman, and interior designer Phoebe Howard, took us on an exclusive tour of the home. Visitors are most intrigued by the miniature versions of the main farmhouse. Called “bunkies” and located on each side of the courtyard, the spaces are infused with the his-and-hers personalities of husband-wife fabric designers Peter Fasano and Elizabeth Hamilton. The foundation elements are the same, but hers has a pretty blue-and-white palette and his speaks in a decidedly masculine voice with darker wood finishes. You’ll also see Lily Natural Alpaca fur pillows in the “his bunkie” and cow hide rugs in the guest cottage.

Background against a pretty green hill, you can see the expanse of the courtyard. On the edge of the property, two miniature versions of the main house—known affectionately as “bunkies”—serve as a visual gateway into the compound. Fresh cut flowers and pretty accessories lend a feminine feel to this bunkie. The casual dining space is surrounded by windows on three sides.
